Barbie is a normal American teenager in her second year of high school. While enthusiastic about the new school year, she finds that she faces stiff competition in achieving her dreams from Raquelle who used to be her best friend but now seems to be intent on stealing the limelight. When the school holds auditions for the opening at the school’s TV station, anchorwoman no less, it is Raquelle who gets the job instead, leaving for her only the position of Raquelle’s personal assistant, where she has to do all the work while being at her former best friend’s beck and call.
Her mood is lifted after she begins to hang out with and soon start dating Todd, who used to be Raquelle’s before she dumped him. Barbie is thrilled when he asks her to the Fall Formal. She and her friends Tia and Courtney head out shopping for a perfect dress for Barbie, but they soon find out that Raquelle and Todd are a couple again. Stephanie, a mysterious woman at the clothing store counter offers the girls counsel and gives them each a charm bracelet. Barbie’s comes with a diary and she decides to begin writing her hopes and dreams in it to make up for her hurt feelings.
But, surprisingly, things she writes in the diary begin happening for real. She starts getting love letters that she thinks might be from Todd. Then Charmz her pop band is hired for the school dance. Barbie then starts spending time with popular girls Dawn and Reagan, intending on doing a story on popular kids and the truth about why they are popular. She intends it to be a mean expose, but finds that she is starting to spend all her time with Dawn and Regan as well as talking with them on the phone for hours, and neglecting her old friends and not showing up for practice with the band. She even misses the class president election that Tia is running for. When she reads through what she wrote in the diary, Barbie suddenly sees that what she wrote has actually become reality. She goes back to the mall to find Stephanie and ask her about it, but no one there knows the woman, nor has she ever apparently worked there. According to those she talks to, Stephanie never even existed.
Meanwhile Tia and Courtney find out that Kevin— another of Barbie’s old friends is the one who has been sending her the love letters. They insist that he has to tell her how he feels, but he won’t, he’s afraid to.
Things then start to go terribly wrong for Barbie. Dawn and Reagan also stop hanging out with Barbie after learning she’s only spending time with them in order to writer her expose. In revenge they go to Raquelle Todd has been sending Barbie love letters because of the magic bracelet she wears. Furious, Raquelle decides to steal Barbie’s “magic bracelet” so she doesn’t lose Todd. After they watch Barbie’s expose and see that Barbie told the popular girls about one of Tia’s secrets, Tia and Courtney tell Barbie they don’t want to be friends with her anymore. Realizing what she’s done, Barbie tells her friends she’s sorry and cancels the broadcast of her expose. Instead she showcases one of Kevin’s clever videos where a paperclip chain attacks his laptop computer. She even decides not to go to the dance after all, but changes her mind when her friends visit her and convince her that they need her back in the band, they have even brought the amazing dress they’d raved about on their shopping trip, as apparently they had put it on hold for her..
Barbie is still concerned that she has no bracelet to wear to the dance, as her friends still have theirs. Kevin creatively makes a bracelet out of one of his guitar strings. Barbie isn’t impressed, considering the gift a “stupid piece of bent metal”. Then she remembers that it is actually just like the bracelet she lost and thanks him. The concert goes amazingly well. The girls rock the dance, especially drummer Courtney who manages a complicated drum stick trick that she’d never been able to do before. Barbie seeks out Todd and they dance. She thanks him for the letters, but he tells her that he didn’t write them. After Raquelle has bad experiences all night with the charm bracelet. It rips her dress and causes her to get punch all over it. She throws it onto the floor, where it is found by Kevin.
Puzzled, Barbie thinks about the letters again, and comes to the realization that Kevin must have been the one who sent them to her, It’s the middle of the dance, but Barbie doesn’t care, she seeks out Kevin to talk about the letters. When she finds him he gives her the charm bracelet that he found on the ground, hoping she considers it a proper bracelet.
Barbie say she is sorry she didn’t realize the letters were from him, but tells him she finally figured it out because of his bizarre rhyming in the poetry: “Who else would rhyme scary with library?” she tells him.
They rejoin the dance as a couple and are soon dating, watching movies and very much in love.
