A flower fairy with no wings called Elina and her friend Bibble, a puffball, are watching their fairy friend Dandelion flying with a trio of pixies. When the pixies make fun of Elina for not having wings Dandelion flutters her wings so powerfully that the tiny pixies are blown out if sight. Later, they return, and warn Elina and her friends to go home, because, if they don’t, they’ll get kidnapped by Laverna, who has already kidnapped the guardian fairy, Topaz.
Elina thinks they are making it up, but Dandelion isn’t sure. She goes home to ask her mother about Laverna. Elina and Bibble return to Peony, her flower home. They talk about what the pixies said. Elina decides that Topaz is too powerful to be kidnapped, but later, still worried, can’t sleep. Peony plays a lullaby to calm her uneasiness, and she finally falls asleep.
Topaz, it turns out, has indeed been kidnapped by Laverna, who plans to kidnap all of the guardians, and take over Fairytopia. Laverna calls her minions, the Fungus, who reveal the formula that she has created. It has the power, when breathed in, to make all the flying creatures in Fairytopia sick and too weak to fly. Laverna’s minions are now in each of the seven regions of Fairytopia spreading the formula into the air. Only Laverna has the antidote. Her plan is to give everyone the antidote, and then everyone will love her, and in their gratitude make her their queen.
Next morning, Bibble wakes up Elina because Peony hasn’t sung them their wake up song. Going outside, Elina finds out why, all the fairy homes have fallen sick. Dandelion arrives and tells her other fairies are having difficulty flying, and Topaz has disappeared. The nearest guardian is Azura, and she is in Fairytown, far away. Elina decides they have to visit Azura, but Dandelion tells her that’s not a good idea; Elina has never left the meadow, and even with wings it takes hours to reach Fairytown. But they can’t come up with a better idea, so but Bibble and Dandelion agree and they head out for Fairytown.
The trio find themselves in a scary forest, When Dandelion flies up to look for a way out, she breathes in Laverna’s formula and loses the power to fly. Seeing that her friend is sick and isn’t used to walking long distances, Elina tells Dandelion to go home before it gets dark, so her mother won’t be worried. In the meantime, Laverna has kidnapped Ruby, one of the other guardians, who remains steadfastly loyal to the Enchantress, Laverna’s sister, and ruler of Fairytopia. Laverna shows Topaz and Ruby the Enchantress is in no state to rule; she has also been made sick by the formula.
Elina and Bibble escape the forest and discover that all the flowers beyond are wilting. They find a flower that’s shaped like a tunnel, and they go inside. On the other end of the tunnel they find the City Hall of Fairytown. They tell the man they find there that they need to see Azura, but she is not there and City Hall is closed. The guardian called Larkspur arrives. The man tells him Ruby and another guardian, Amethyst, have been kidnapped. Larkspur immediately heads off to locate Azura. Elina and Bibble follow him.
Elina and Bibble try to fly a flower after Larkspur, but it crashes. They find Azura’s house surrounded by guards. Azura tells them to go home. Elina tells her they have journeyed all the way from the Magic Meadow. Azura tells Elina to come closer and is shocked when she briefly sees a rainbow in Elina’s eye. She invites Elina to come into her house, and tells Elina she is destined for great things, that what the rainbow in her eyes means. Azura tells her that all of Fairytopia is in danger because of Laverna, and next morning she will go to speak to Dahlia, a dryad in the Wildering Wood. Azura give Elina her necklace and asks her to take care of it.
Next morning, Azura asks Bibble to locate Hue, who lives in the south; she needs to get him an important scroll. Azura is about head off, but is kidnapped by the Fungus. When Elina wakes up, she finds that all the guards have been tied up. Accused of being the cause, Elina runs away and encounters the helpful Hue, who flies Elina to the Wildering Wood.
Fungus bring Azura to Laverna’s lair. Laverna sees Azura isn’t wearing her guardian’s necklace. The Fungus tell Laverna a wingless fairy has it. Laverna realizes that Elina can’t be affected by her formula, since she doesn’t fly. She orders the Fungus to find Elina. In the meantime, Hue tells Elina it will take them a day to reach Wildering Wood. On the way they run across some of Laverna’s firebirds. To escape them, Hue flies through rainbow colored waterfall into a cove, disturbing the mermaids and Prince Nalu, who yells at the flying fairy, at least until he sees Elina.
Even though firebirds supposedly hate water they still come after Hue and Elina, who only escape after eating the special seaweed thrown to them by Prince Nalu. Once they eat the seaweed, Hue and Elina are able to breathe water and swim to safety with Prince Nalu. He shows them to Wildering Wood, and when he expresses his hopes of seeing Elina again, Bibble makes fun of the both of them. Hue breathes in Laverna’s formula and can’t fly. Elina decides to leave Bibble with Hue and find Dahlia on her own
However, she soon begins doubting herself, she is, after all, not a powerful guardian like Azura. Luckily, she soon comes across some happy trolls who help her, but they don’t find Dahlia, just a lot of sick trees. Azura’s necklace begins to glow and “calls” Dahlia, and the happy trolls leave. Dahlia tells Elina she doesn’t want to risk herself for Fairytopia. The last time she tried to help the guardians they wouldn’t accept her help because she once worked with Laverna. Elina convinces her to help, and takes Dahlia to Hue and Bibble. The two join Elina and Dahlia to go and stop Laverna.
Laverna is in her lair, and has now captured all the guardians. She places a crystal in her throne. The guardian’s necklaces alert her to presence of Azura’s necklace, which Elina still has. Laverna aware she is near, orders the Fungus to capture her. Dahlia tells Elina that Laverna has a device that can use the strength of her royal bloodline to transfer the power from the fairy guardians’ necklaces to herself. She doesn’t know how it works, but something called the “union point” is its weakness.
The group arrives at Laverna’s lair, and even though Hue is feeling better, they can’t fly in because of the firebirds. Elina wants to go alone because she has Azura’s necklace, and is she almost captured by the Fungus before Hue flies in with Dahlia and distracts them. They and Bibble, however, end up being captured. Elina finds her way into the lair and makes her way to where Dahlia, Bibble, and Hue are being held by Laverna by the Fungus. When the Fungus leave, Elina makes her presence known and tells Laverna to let her friends go. Laverna agrees, if Elina gives her the necklace. Elina refuses. Laverna convinces Elina to join her by offering her wings, but it is a trick to brainwash her.
Laverna tells brainwashed Elina she will rule Fairytopia, and Elina will have wings, and everything in her world will be she remembers it. She then tells Elina to put Azura’s necklace around Azura’s neck, telling her, if she does it, she’ll get all she’s ever wanted.
The guardians’ necklaces begin to transfer their powers to Laverna. Elina puts the necklace on Azura. When she does so, she snaps out of Laverna’s mind control, and realizes the ‘union point’ is the crystal in the throne. She takes Azura’s necklace and throws it at the crystal, shattering it. As the guardians powers are returned, Laverna, her throne, and her sceptre all vanish. The guardians and Fairytopia are saved.
In the Magic Meadow, the pixies are once again able to fly, and all are happy to see Elina. Hue visits Elina, as does the Enchantress. She thanks Elina and her friends, and gives Elina a rainbow colored necklace before flying away. The necklace starts glowing and Elina suddenly is endowed with a pair of beautiful pink wings. She joins Dandelion, Hue and Bibble and they fly together in the sky above her home.
